What Is the APR Games? America’s Player-First Pro Rugby Tournament Explained

Quick Answer

The APR Games is an annual professional rugby tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada every first weekend of June. It is operated by American Pro Rugby and features six elite teams competing across three divisions — Men's Elite, Women's Social, and Youth — in 15v15 full rugby. Players register individually for $299 with gear included. The first APR Games takes place June 6–8, 2027 with $15,000 in total prize money.

APR Games 2027 — Vegas rugby teams, coaching, Las Vegas stadium and trophy

Rugby in America has needed something like this for a long time. Not another governing body. Not another club competition. Something built differently, from the ground up, for the player first.

The APR Games is that thing. And this post explains exactly what it is, how it works, and why it matters for pro rugby in America.

American Pro Rugby is building the APR Games as an annual tournament institution — not a one-off event, not a trial run. The first edition takes place June 6–8, 2027 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Every year after that, same city, same first weekend of June. The stage gets bigger every time.

The Core Concept — Player First, Always

Every other rugby tournament in America works the same way. A club or team enters. The club pays the entry fee. The club organises its players. The club's governing body approves the participation. The player is at the bottom of a long chain of institutions.

The APR Games is the opposite. The player is the unit. You register directly with APR. You pay $299. You get your official team jersey, your full kit bag, and your spot in the tournament. No club required. No governing body permission needed. No committee vote on whether you're eligible.

This individual-first model exists because the existing club structure in American rugby makes it extremely difficult to build new events. Clubs have established seasons, governing body commitments, and existing loyalties. Trying to get clubs to enter a new tournament means getting past all of those barriers. APR bypasses them entirely by going direct to the player.

The Format — Full Rugby, No Compromise

Most new rugby events in America default to sevens or tens. The format is shorter, easier to manage, requires fewer players, and fits into a tighter schedule. We understand why. But we chose not to do it.

The APR Games plays 15v15 full rugby. 60-minute games — slightly condensed from the standard 80 minutes to account for the Las Vegas June heat and to allow multiple games across three fields simultaneously — but full contact, full structure, full rugby.

This decision is deliberate. Sevens is a different sport. The skills transfer partially but not completely. If APR's goal is to build a pro rugby tournament in America, it needs to look like pro rugby. That means fifteen players per side, scrums, lineouts, mauls, and the full tactical complexity of the game.

Format Detail APR Games
Players per side 15
Game duration 60 minutes
Number of fields 3 simultaneous
Kickoff times Evening — from 5:00 PM
Divisions Men's Elite, Women's Social, Youth
Total prize money $15,000

All games are played in the evening to address Las Vegas's early June heat — typically over 100°F during the day — and to maximise the atmosphere that only Las Vegas can deliver at night.

The Six Teams — Five Franchises and a Wildcard

Six teams compete at the APR Games. Five are APR founding franchises — all Las Vegas-based, all established with their own identities, websites, and supporter communities:

The sixth team is the Invitational — a wildcard filled with elite international players selected from across the global rugby world. The invitational team changes every year. It's never the same twice. It brings unfamiliar styles, international pedigree, and players with something to prove against established franchises.

The invitational team for the APR Games 2027 will be revealed mid-2027. It is the most talked-about team before a ball is kicked every year — and that's by design. Visit the APR Teams page to learn more about all six.

The Three Divisions and Prize Money

The APR Games runs three simultaneous divisions across the three-day event:

  • Men's Elite — $10,000 prize pool. The flagship division. Pool stage into semi-finals and a final. Champions take $6,000, runners-up $3,000, third place $1,000. The Men's Elite final kicks off at 8:00 PM on Sunday June 8 under full floodlights.
  • Women's Social — $5,000 prize pool. Competitive, welcoming, and real. Same format as Men's Elite, same professional atmosphere, real prize money. Champions take $3,000, runners-up $1,500, third place $500.
  • Youth Division — Medals and trophies. The next generation on the biggest stage. Age-appropriate format, separate scheduling, same professional atmosphere. Gold medals and trophy for champions, silver and bronze for runners-up and third place.

Prize money in American rugby at the club level is essentially non-existent. The APR Games changes that. $15,000 distributed across three divisions means players at every level have something real to compete for — not just a shield on a wall.

The Coaching Clinic Week — A Tournament Within a Tournament

The week before the APR Games — Wednesday June 4 through Friday June 6, 2027 — is Coaching Clinic Week. World-renowned coaches run intensive paid seminars open to all coaches for $499, covering attacking systems, set piece, defence, player development, and video analysis.

This is not a generic coaching course. These are the same coaches who will coach the APR teams at the tournament days later. Clinic attendees get direct access to elite coaching minds — and then get to watch those same coaches operate in a high-pressure competitive environment over the following weekend.

The coaching clinic is a completely separate revenue stream and a standalone event in its own right. For USA coaches, it's a rare opportunity to learn from international-level coaching talent in a Las Vegas setting. Bookings open September 2026 via Clann13.

The Three-Day Event Schedule

The APR Games runs across three full days — Friday opening night, Saturday pool games, Sunday finals:

  • Friday June 6 — Opening Night. Team parades, coach introductions, opening ceremony, exhibition match, and opening night social. The tournament begins not with a whistle but with an event.
  • Saturday June 7 — Pool Games. All three divisions playing simultaneously across three fields. Evening kickoffs from 5:00 PM. Pool standings determine semi-final qualifiers.
  • Sunday June 8 — Finals Day. Youth final at 4:00 PM. Women's Social final at 6:00 PM. Men's Elite final at 8:00 PM. Three champions crowned. $15,000 distributed.

The event is fully produced — purpose-built venue with three fields, professional tent and shade structures, catering, merchandise, and live streaming. This is not a club day at the local pitch. It is a produced sporting event in Las Vegas.

The Founding Partners

The APR Games is supported by a strong group of founding sponsors who committed to this vision from the beginning:

Sponsorship opportunities remain open. Contact APR to discuss title, team, and clinic sponsorship packages for the APR Games 2027.

The Long-Term Vision

The APR Games is not a one-off. It is the first edition of what APR intends to be an annual institution in American rugby — the equivalent of what the CrossFit Games did for CrossFit, or what the Ironman World Championship did for triathlon.

Year one establishes the format, the stage, and the brand. Year two the audience is bigger, the coaching talent more prominent, the prize money larger, and the invitational team more prestigious. By year five the APR Games is a date on the global rugby calendar — an event that elite players plan their post-season around.

That's the vision. And it starts in Las Vegas on June 6, 2027.
