Gifts for Rugby Players: The 2026 Holiday Gift Guide

Gear they'll actually use, books worth reading, jerseys with a story and trips they'll talk about for years. Here's how to pick the right gift for the player, fan or coach in your life, plus the 2027 rugby calendar that makes the best presents easy.

Gifts for rugby players: teammates in plain red and black kit share a ribbon-wrapped rugby ball on a floodlit pitch at dusk
The best rugby gifts get used on the field, worn in the stands or remembered for years.

Shopping for gifts for rugby players is harder than it looks. Rugby people are particular about their boots, loyal to their clubs and allergic to anything that looks like it was made for American football. The good news: the best rugby gifts fall into a handful of clear categories, and 2027 is one of the biggest years on the rugby calendar in a generation, which makes experience gifts easier than ever.

This guide is written for American families, partners, teammates and club organizers. It covers practical gear a player will actually use, the jerseys and books rugby fans love, the 2027 events worth gifting a trip to (including the APR Games 2027 in Las Vegas on Memorial Day Weekend, May 29–31, 2027), streaming options for fans, and a few gift mistakes to avoid. We haven't listed brand-name products or prices, because the right boot, ball or bag depends on the player. Instead, you'll find what to look for, and why.

The short version
  • For players: a quality mouthguard (World Rugby recommends one for every player), the right boots for their pitch, a training ball, a kit bag or fingerless mitts.
  • For fans: a team jersey, a classic rugby book, or a streaming subscription for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
  • For the ultimate gift: an experience. Think Rugby League Las Vegas (Feb 27, 2027), SVNS New York (Mar 13–14, 2027), the APR Games in Las Vegas (May 29–31, 2027) or the Rugby World Cup in Australia (Oct 1–Nov 13, 2027).
  • For the player who wants to compete: put the APR Games on their radar. Player entry is $299 and includes an official team jersey and full kit bag.
  • Avoid: gloves (not permitted under World Rugby law), guessing boot sizes, and American football gear.

How to Choose the Right Rugby Gift

Before you buy anything, figure out which kind of rugby person you're shopping for. The same gift that delights a 40-year-old fan can annoy a 22-year-old flanker who already has strong opinions about mouthguards.

The active player

They train during the week and play on weekends. They care about gear that works, fits and survives. Practical gifts win here, but only if they match the player's position, pitch and preferences. When in doubt, ask a teammate or give a gift card to a store they already use.

The fan

Fans want to feel closer to the game: a jersey from a team they follow, a great book, a way to watch more rugby, or tickets. In 2027 that list is unusually long, with the Rugby World Cup, a US stop on the sevens circuit and a pro tournament in Las Vegas all on the calendar.

The coach or club organizer

Coaches rarely buy anything for themselves. Think gifts that make the season easier: training equipment for the club, a coaching course, or something that helps the club look and feel professional.

The newcomer

Someone who's just discovered rugby (or keeps saying they want to try it) needs encouragement more than gear. A mouthguard, a ball and a nudge toward a local club or a beginner clinic make a perfect starter pack. Our guide on how to start playing rugby as an adult is a good companion read.

Gear Gifts Players Will Actually Use

Gear is the most popular category of gift for rugby players, and the easiest to get wrong. These are the items that matter most, with what to look for in each.

1. A good mouthguard

If you buy one piece of rugby gear, make it this. World Rugby's laws state that it "recommends all players wear a mouthguard or dental protector," and most clubs, schools and tournaments expect players to have one. Mouthguards wear out, get lost in kit bags and get chewed flat, so even a player who already owns one will use a spare.

Options range from boil-and-bite models to custom-fitted guards made from a dental impression. A custom guard is a thoughtful premium gift, but it requires the player's involvement (an impression or a scan), so it works best as a voucher rather than a surprise. Pick a color that suits their team, and steer clear of novelty designs that a referee or opponent might find distracting.

2. Boots for the right surface

Rugby boots are personal. Players care about fit, stud pattern and the surface they play on, so don't guess. A few things to know before you shop with them:

  • Soft ground vs firm ground: soft-ground boots usually have screw-in metal or replaceable studs for wet, muddy pitches. Firm-ground or molded boots suit dry, hard pitches like many in the American Southwest.
  • Position matters: forwards often prefer more ankle support and grip for scrums and mauls; backs often want lighter boots for speed.
  • Studs must be legal: World Rugby's Law 4 permits studs, including molded rubber studs, but there are regulations on stud design. A rugby-specific boot from a reputable maker is the safe choice.

Gift tip: make it a shopping trip. Players will thank you for the boots they chose, not the ones you guessed.

3. A training ball

Every player can use another ball. A size 5 is standard for adult rugby union; younger players use smaller sizes depending on age. A grippy training ball for passing drills, or a ball signed by teammates after a big season, makes a gift that's both useful and personal.

4. A proper kit bag

Rugby kit gets muddy, wet and heavy. A bag with a separate boot compartment and a ventilated section for dirty kit is a gift that gets used every week. If your player is thinking about competing at the APR Games, note that the $299 player entry already includes a full kit bag, so you might prioritize something else.

5. Fingerless mitts, headgear and pads

Here's a rule many gift-givers don't know: gloves are not permitted under World Rugby's laws. Fingerless mitts are allowed, and they're popular with players who want extra grip in cold or wet weather. World Rugby also permits headgear, shoulder pads and approved chest pads. These are personal choices, so ask before buying, and look for items that meet World Rugby's equipment specifications.

6. Recovery and training tools

Foam rollers, massage balls, resistance bands and a large insulated water bottle are simple gifts that players use year-round. For players training through a hot Southwest summer, a big insulated bottle may be the most-used item they own.

Jerseys and Team Kit: Gifts With a Story

A jersey is the most personal gift a rugby fan can get, because it says who they support. Three directions work well:

Their club or college team

Many American club and college teams sell jerseys, training tops or hoodies through their own shops. A club jersey shows you've paid attention to the team they actually play for or follow every week.

An APR team jersey

The APR Games 2027 features five founding Las Vegas franchises: Vegas Kings, Vegas Knights, Vegas Blackjacks, Downtown Rugby and Vegas Lions, plus one mystery invitational team. Team jerseys for the five franchises are in the official APR shop, and you can meet the teams on the APR teams page. If the person you're shopping for is planning to play, remember the $299 entry includes an official APR Games team jersey.

A classic or retro jersey

Heavy cotton jerseys with collars and bold hoops remain some of the most loved pieces in rugby fashion. They're comfortable, they wear well off the field, and they spark conversations. If you need inspiration, read our look at classic rugby jerseys that need to make a comeback.

Sizing tip: rugby jerseys often fit differently than American sports tops. Modern match jerseys run tight; classic cotton jerseys are roomier. Check the size guide or include a gift receipt.

Rugby Books Every Fan Should Own

Rugby has a deep library of great writing, and books are one of the easiest gifts for a fan who seems to have everything. These widely recommended titles cover history, leadership, rivalry and the women's game:

BookAuthorWhy it makes a great gift
Playing the EnemyJohn CarlinHow Nelson Mandela used the 1995 Rugby World Cup to help unite South Africa. Perfect for fans and non-fans alike.
LegacyJames KerrLeadership lessons drawn from the All Blacks' culture. A great pick for coaches, captains and business-minded fans.
The GrudgeTom EnglishThe story of the 1990 Scotland v England Grand Slam decider and one of rugby's fiercest rivalries.
World in Their HandsMartyn ThomasHow a group of friends staged the first Women's Rugby World Cup in 1991. Ideal for anyone who plays or follows the women's game.
RiseSiya KolisiThe Springboks captain's journey from childhood poverty to lifting the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
A Game for HooligansHuw RichardsA lively history of rugby union for the fan who wants the full story.
The BattlePaul O'ConnellThe Ireland and Munster great's autobiography, from his early days to captaining the British & Irish Lions.

Experience Gifts: The 2027 Rugby Calendar

Rugby League Las Vegas (February 27, 2027)

Australia's NRL has opened its season in Las Vegas in recent years, and the 2027 edition is set for Saturday, February 27 at Allegiant Stadium, with tickets on sale through the clubs' official channels. It's rugby league rather than rugby union, but for a fan who loves a big-stadium atmosphere and a Vegas weekend, it's an easy win. Check the official event pages for the full match card before you buy.

HSBC SVNS New York (March 13–14, 2027)

World Rugby's 2026–27 sevens schedule includes one US stop: New York, at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, on March 13–14, 2027. Sevens is fast, festive and family-friendly, and with rugby sevens returning to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028, the road to LA runs through events like this.

The APR Games 2027 (May 29–31, 2027)

Our own tournament, and the one we'd most love to see under a few Christmas trees. The APR Games is a 10s rugby tournament in Las Vegas over Memorial Day Weekend, played in evening kickoffs under floodlights. Saturday May 29 brings the opening ceremony (6 PM), an exhibition (7:30 PM) and a social (9 PM). Sunday May 30 is pool games in the evening. Monday May 31 is finals night: Youth final at 4 PM, Women's Social final at 6 PM and Men's Elite final at 8 PM.

Total prize money is $15,000: the Men's Elite division plays for $10,000 ($6,000 / $3,000 / $1,000) and the Women's Social division for $5,000 ($3,000 / $1,500 / $500). The Youth division plays for medals and trophies, with no entry fee.

There's no APR gift card, so here's how to make it a gift: write a card promising the trip, join the player waitlist together, and plan the travel around it. Registration dates haven't been announced yet, so the waitlist is the best way to be first in line. New to the event? Start with What Is the APR Games? and What Is 10s Rugby?

The APR Coaching Clinic (May 28–31, 2027)

For the coach who gives everything to their club, a place at the APR Coaching Clinic in Las Vegas is a gift that pays back all season. The clinic runs alongside the tournament, so a coach can learn by day and watch 10s rugby under the lights at night.

Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia (October 1–November 13, 2027)

The men's Rugby World Cup is the biggest gift on this list. More than 1.3 million tickets had been sold by the time the general sale opened on October 1, 2026, out of roughly 2.5 million expected. Adult tickets for eligible matches start at A$40 and children's at A$20, and organizers say at least one million tickets cost A$100 or less. The USA Eagles are in Pool E, with matches against France in Melbourne (October 2), Samoa in Perth (October 9) and Japan in Adelaide (October 15). For a fan who's always wanted to see the Eagles at a World Cup, this is the year. Buy only through the official Rugby World Cup ticketing site.

Streaming Gifts for Fans Who Watch Everything

For the fan who's up at strange hours to watch matches from the other side of the world, a streaming subscription is a gift they'll use every week. Here's where the major competitions sit for American viewers, based on current broadcast deals:

  • Paramount+: World Rugby's deal with CBS Sports means Paramount+ streams every Rugby World Cup 2027 match, all USA men's and women's matches and the SVNS series through 2029.
  • ESPN: Major League Rugby's deal with ESPN runs through the 2027 season, with selected fixtures on ESPN networks and Sunday Night Rugby on the ESPN App.
  • DAZN: Women's Elite Rugby has streamed free on DAZN, a nice tip for fans of the women's game.
  • FloRugby: carries England's Gallagher PREM in the US.

Broadcast deals change, so double-check the current listings before you subscribe. For a full rundown of leagues and teams, see our guide to pro rugby in the USA and how to watch.

Gifts for the Coach, the Captain and the Club

Some of the best rugby gifts go to the whole team. If you're a parent, sponsor or club alumnus, consider:

  • Training equipment: tackle shields, tackle bags, cones and a set of new balls. These wear out fast and clubs rarely have the budget to replace them.
  • Coaching education: a course, a clinic place or a resource library for a volunteer coach.
  • Kit for new players: spare mouthguards and socks so newcomers can train from day one.
  • Team-building: a team trip to a tournament. Nothing bonds a squad like a weekend away together.
  • Club presentation: a club that looks professional attracts players and sponsors. APR partner American LED Signage works with venues and businesses on signage, a big-ticket gift idea for a club with a clubhouse or home ground.

Gifts for the Rugby Entrepreneur

Rugby clubs are full of people who start things: gyms, physio practices, food trucks, coaching businesses, apparel brands. If a teammate is launching a business, a gift to the business itself can mean more than another gadget. APR partner Giftabiz is building a platform where friends, family and community can send gifts and video messages to a new business launch through a shareable page. It's in early access, so check their site for availability.

Other APR partners serve the business side of rugby life too: In Too Win focuses on Las Vegas business and investment, WXE is our energy partner, and Vibe Coding covers building apps and websites with AI tools, useful for the teammate who keeps promising to build the club a proper website.

Rugby Gift Mistakes to Avoid

A few common slip-ups, so your gift lands the way you want it to:

  1. Buying gloves. Full gloves aren't permitted under World Rugby law. Fingerless mitts are fine.
  2. Guessing boot sizes or stud types. Boots are personal and surface-specific. Shop together or use a gift card.
  3. Confusing rugby with American football. Helmets, hard shoulder pads and football cleats aren't rugby gear. Rugby shoulder pads are soft and must meet World Rugby specifications.
  4. Ignoring team loyalties. Never buy a fan the jersey of their rival. If you're unsure, a classic or neutral design is safer.
  5. Buying event tickets from unofficial sellers. For big events like the Rugby World Cup, use the official ticketing site to avoid scams.
  6. Forgetting the newcomer. A first mouthguard and a ball can be the nudge that turns "I should try rugby" into a lifelong hobby.

APR's View: Give the Gift of Playing

The best rugby gift we know isn't gear or a jersey. It's an invitation to play. Rugby in America grows when more people get on the field, and tournaments like the APR Games exist to give adult players, women's social teams and youth players something to train for. If someone in your life has been talking about getting back into rugby, or trying it for the first time, a mouthguard, a ball and a circled date on the calendar might be the push they need.

And if they're already all-in? Pair a jersey from the APR shop with a spot on the waitlist and a promise of a weekend in Las Vegas. Sign up for the APR newsletter so you don't miss registration news.
